Former PDP chairman Bamanga Tukur dies at 90
Former Peoples Democratic Party national chairman Bamanga Tukur has died at the age of 90, his family announced on Saturday.
The family said Tukur died on September 12, 2026. Daily Post reported that he died at his Abuja residence after a prolonged illness, while Punch reported the family statement signed by his son, Awwal D. Tukur.
The statement described him as the family’s father and patriarch and said he lived a life of service to his family, Adamawa State and Nigeria. It also said funeral prayer and burial details would be communicated later. Daily Post reported that burial was expected at the Lamido of Adamawa’s Palace in Yola.
Tukur was a former governor of the old Gongola State, which was later split into Adamawa and Taraba states. He also served as Minister of Industries during the military administration of Sani Abacha.
He later became national chairman of the PDP and remained one of the older northern political figures associated with the party’s early years in power after Nigeria returned to civilian rule.
Tukur was also known in business circles and had interests that kept him visible beyond party politics. Daily Post reported that he is survived by 17 children.
