FG Pays D’Tigress Players $100,000 Reward Each
The Federal Government has paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each D’Tigress player as part of the reward promised after Nigeria’s latest AfroBasket triumph.
The National Sports Commission confirmed the payment, saying it completed President Bola Tinubu’s pledge to the senior women’s basketball team after they won a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title.
Punch and Vanguard both reported that the payment covered the players and followed the team’s successful title defence. The reward was announced after D’Tigress extended Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball.
The commission said the payment was meant to recognise the players’ performance and reinforce government support for athletes who deliver major international results for the country.
D’Tigress have become one of Nigeria’s most successful national teams in recent years, with their AfroBasket run adding to wider calls for more consistent funding, preparation and welfare support for women’s sport.
