APGA Faces No Rival In 20 Anambra Council Chairmanship Races

APGA is going into Saturday’s Anambra local government election with no rival for chairmanship seats in 20 of the state’s 21 council areas, according to reports on the final stretch of the poll.

The only expected chairmanship contest is in Anambra East, where a Young Progressives Party candidate is challenging the incumbent council chairman. Vanguard reported that Governor Chukwuma Soludo told supporters at Otuocha that opposition parties had not fielded candidates in the other councils.

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, however, said a sole candidate will not be declared winner automatically. The commission’s information and publicity commissioner, Tony Chinedu, said candidates running alone must still secure the required majority of Yes votes.

ANSIEC said 22 candidates were screened for the 21 chairmanship positions. APGA fielded candidates in all 21 councils, while the YPP fielded one candidate.

The election is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026. The commission said the process had reached its final stage after the screening and publication of candidate names.
