YPP Boycotts Anambra Council Poll Over Violence Claims

The Young Progressives Party has boycotted the Anambra local government election in Anambra East, alleging violence and irregularities during the poll.

The election was held across the state’s 21 local government areas on Saturday. Channels TV reported voters, party agents, electoral officers and security personnel at polling centres listed by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission.

Daily Post reported that the YPP was the only opposition party with a chairmanship candidate in Anambra East and candidates in the area’s 15 wards. The party’s collation agent, Charles Ifediora, announced the boycott and accused APGA and the state government of creating an atmosphere that scared opposition members away.

Vanguard also reported tension and gunshots around the poll as YPP and APGA supporters clashed over the election. The allegation is politically sensitive, so the claims remain attributed to the party and the reports that carried them.

The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance fielded chairmanship candidates in the 21 local government areas and councillorship candidates in the 326 wards.
