Atiku Clarifies Fuel Subsidy Plan After Aide’s Comment

Atiku Abubakar has clarified his fuel subsidy position after a comment from one of his aides suggested he would restore subsidy and remove it later if elected president in 2027.

The former vice president’s media team said the comment did not properly represent his position. It said Atiku’s proposal was aimed at reducing the cost of living and would not return Nigeria to what it described as the old subsidy abuse.

The clarification follows an earlier political exchange over fuel subsidy, reported by NaijaTrend here, after the Presidency criticised Atiku’s promise to revisit the policy.

Daily Post reported that Atiku’s team rejected the wording attributed to Paul Ibe and said no spokesperson had authority to restate the policy as a temporary restoration followed by removal. Vanguard reported that the campaign framed the proposal as relief for households and businesses affected by high fuel costs.

The subsidy question is likely to remain a major campaign issue as parties position themselves for the 2027 election season and as Nigerians continue to face high transport and living costs.
