Police Say 295 Suspects Were Arrested During Osun Governorship Election

Police say 295 suspects were arrested over incidents recorded during Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, adding a new security tally to the post-election fallout.

After screening, 293 of the suspects were released on bail, while two remained in custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Force spokesperson Ani Iniedu confirmed the figures, saying the arrests were linked to incidents around the election. The police had warned parties, candidates and supporters before the poll that anyone found disrupting the process would be arrested and prosecuted.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said it made no arrests during the election. Its spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, said the corps deployed armed and unarmed personnel across local government areas, wards and polling centres to help protect voters, polling units and election materials.

Earlier security reports covered other arrests before and during voting. The new figure gives the police’s post-election total for incidents recorded around the poll.

The election, which returned Governor Ademola Adeleke for another term, drew heavy security attention because of repeated warnings over violence, vote buying and attempts to disrupt voting.
