Voters, INEC Officials Flee As Violence Hits Ejigbo Polling Unit

Voting was disrupted at a polling area in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun State on Saturday after violence broke out during the governorship election.

Premium Times and Daily Post reported that voters, residents and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission ran from the scene as tension escalated. Video footage cited by the outlets showed people moving away from the polling area while motorcycles and vehicles also left the scene.

Premium Times reported that the crisis followed the discovery of materials allegedly linked to vote-buying by the All Progressives Congress. It said a young resident and some voters seized the materials before people said to be connected to them arrived and allegedly tried to take the young man away.

Daily Post reported that the immediate cause of the violence was not yet clear from its account. Both outlets said details of casualties or damage had not been confirmed at the time of their reports.

The disruption came during a tense Osun governorship poll in which several local incidents had already drawn public attention. The Ejigbo incident was specific to voting at the affected polling area and was not a general statewide report.
