Opposition Goes All In as Atiku, Obi, Amaechi Officially Adopt ADC to Challenge Tinubu in 2027
Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and a coalition of opposition heavyweights have officially adopted the African Democratic Congress as their vehicle to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027, marking what analysts are calling the biggest realignment in Nigerian politics since the end of military rule.
The unveiling took place at Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, after the original venue, Wells Carlton Hotel, reportedly cancelled the booking. Former Senate President David Mark was announced as interim National Chairman, with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola taking the role of interim National Secretary.
The coalition’s message was blunt. Mark accused the Tinubu administration of steering Nigeria toward what he called “a creeping civilian dictatorship,” saying the National Assembly has been reduced to “cheerleaders and praise singers of the President.” He pointed to rising insecurity, food inflation, and the deliberate destabilisation of opposition parties as evidence that the government is pursuing total state capture.
“Nigeria is in ICU,” declared outgoing ADC chairman Ralph Nwosu, who along with the party’s old guard stepped aside to make room for the new leadership. “Lives are being lost. What solution has this government offered?”
The event brought together an unusual mix of political figures from across party lines. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party candidate Peter Obi were the marquee names, but the roll call included former APC chairman John Oyegun, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi, and several senators and ex-governors. Amaechi revealed he had resigned from the APC on Tuesday night, adding that he was surprised the party had not expelled him sooner.
Not everyone in the ADC welcomed the newcomers. Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, criticised the move, accusing the coalition leaders of hijacking the party and lacking the capacity to lead.
Obi, for his part, pushed back against speculation that he would play second fiddle to Atiku. “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” he told Channels TV. How the party handles its presidential primary, or whether it can even reach a consensus candidate, remains a open question.
The PDP’s acting chairman Umar Damagum warned that members who joined the ADC would face consequences, insisting the PDP remains united. The APC was more dismissive. Its national director of publicity Bala Ibrahim called the coalition members “analogue politicians” who are “not in tune with modern politics,” while presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala, a former Atiku ally now working for Tinubu, branded the coalition “dead on arrival” and an “association of wild goose chasers” made up of “internally displaced politicians.”
Whether that dismissiveness is warranted depends on whether Atiku and Obi can actually work together this time. They ran on the same ticket in 2019 and lost. In 2023, they split the opposition vote, with Tinubu winning with just 37% while Atiku got 29% and Obi pulled 25%. The math is straightforward: together, they would have won. The question is whether egos and competing ambitions will tear this coalition apart before 2027.
