Police Say IGP Gave No Shoot-On-Sight Order In Benue

The Nigeria Police Force says Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu did not issue a blanket shoot-on-sight order during his visit to Benue State.
The clarification follows NaijaTrend’s earlier report on the remarks here. Police said the IGP was referring to Force Order 237, which sets out when officers may use firearms while carrying out lawful duties.
Punch, Daily Trust and Daily Post all reported that the Force rejected the interpretation that Disu had ordered indiscriminate shooting. The police statement said officers had been reminded to act within the law and follow approved rules of engagement.
The Force also said illegal possession of firearms and killings would not be tolerated. It urged the public to understand the remarks as a warning against armed criminality, not permission for unlawful use of force.
