Fire Destroys 17 Shops At Sabo Market In Lagos

An early morning fire destroyed 17 shops at Sabo Market in Ikorodu, Lagos State, but emergency officials said no death or injury was recorded.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the fire began around 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday and was suspected to have started from an electrical surge while public power supply was active.

LASEMA spokesperson Olawale Afolabi said preliminary findings showed the fire started in one shop before spreading to adjoining stalls. Responders met a row of shops in flames when they arrived.

The agency said its response team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service contained the fire before it spread to other parts of the market and nearby buildings.

A post-incident assessment found that 17 of the 32 shops in the affected section were damaged. Provisions, groceries, foodstuffs and other goods were destroyed.

LASEMA said the remaining shops and nearby sections were saved because emergency personnel arrived quickly. Recovery work had been completed by the time the agency issued its update.
