Kano CSOs Seek Suspension Of Political Rallies Over Violence Fears

Civil society groups in Kano are asking authorities to suspend large political rallies in the state, warning that rising political violence could worsen as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.

The Kano Civil Society Alliance for Peaceful Politics said political thuggery, known locally as Yan Daba, had become a serious threat to lives, property and the credibility of the electoral process. The group called for an immediate pause on rallies and other large political gatherings until security safeguards are strengthened.

Daily Trust reported that the coalition’s convener, Abdullahi D. Mohammed, blamed the surge on politicians who allegedly fund and direct violent gangs during electioneering. The coalition said clashes between rival groups had become more frequent despite a previous government amnesty programme for repentant thugs.

Channels TV reported that the alliance cited multiple violent incidents, including about 10 deaths around State Road in May 2026 and five more killings on May 5. It also referred to earlier clashes in Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna and Unguwa Uku, as well as incidents in Hotoro, Koki, Abattoir and Rimin Kebe.

TheCable reported that Mohammed told a briefing in Kano that political ambition should not be pursued at the expense of public safety. The group said the state needed preventive steps before campaigns and party mobilisation enter a more intense phase.

The appeal puts pressure on security agencies, political parties and state authorities to balance campaign activity with public-order concerns in one of Nigeria’s most politically active states.
