Tinubu Sends Secondary Education Reform Bill To National Assembly

President Bola Tinubu has sent a bill to the National Assembly seeking changes to the management and regulation of public senior secondary education in Nigeria.

The National Senior Secondary Education Commission Amendment Bill, 2026, was read to senators on Thursday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In the letter, Tinubu said the proposal is meant to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education. He said the Federal Executive Council approved the bill on April 30 before the Federal Ministry of Justice reviewed and finalised it.

Daily Post reported that Tinubu asked the Senate to give the bill legislative attention. Premium Times reported that the letter did not clearly say whether the proposal would remove the current split between junior and senior secondary school.

The bill arrives during public debate over the federal government’s plan to reform the JSS and SSS structure. Education Minister Tunji Alausa had earlier linked that debate to concerns about pupils dropping out between primary and secondary school.

For now, the confirmed step is the transmission of the amendment bill to lawmakers for consideration.
