Senate Asks FG To End Rehabilitation Programme For Terrorists
The Senate has asked the Federal Government to suspend programmes that rehabilitate and reintegrate terrorists and other violent criminals back into society.
Lawmakers adopted the resolution during Tuesday’s plenary after a motion on attacks, abductions and killings of serving and retired military personnel across the country.
The motion was sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua of Katsina Central. Vanguard reported that the Senate also called on security and intelligence agencies to improve intelligence gathering, surveillance and early warning systems.
Daily Trust reported that the prayer specifically targeted state pardons and rehabilitation for suspected Boko Haram members and other insurgents. The chamber linked the debate to the abduction and killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and other attacks on security personnel.
Channels TV reported that the Senate urged security agencies to intensify arrests and prosecution of terrorists and criminal groups responsible for attacks across the country.
Lawmakers said repeated attacks on serving and retired officers were hurting morale, deepening fear among families and weakening public confidence in the state’s ability to protect citizens.
