FG Moves To Make NIN Nigeria’s Sole National Identity
The Federal Government is pushing for full implementation of the NIMC Act 2026, with the National Identification Number set to become Nigeria’s single recognised identity standard.
The move is meant to reduce the many identity databases used across government and make one verified number central to public services, planning and digital access.
Budget and Economic Planning Minister Abubakar Bagudu discussed the implementation plan with NIMC Director-General Abisoye Odusote in Abuja on Monday.
Bagudu said the law gives Nigeria a stronger legal base for a secure and inclusive identity system, but added that its value will depend on how well it is implemented.
He called for closer work among federal, state and local governments so that agencies can reduce duplicate databases and build trust in the national identity framework.
Punch reported that NIMC enrolments have reached 136 million as the wider identity overhaul begins. NaijaTrend previously covered what the NIMC Act means for Nigerians here.
Bagudu said a comprehensive identity database would help government planning, resource allocation and service delivery. He also pointed to the need for stronger safeguards on data privacy and cybersecurity as more services rely on the digital identity system.
The reform could affect how Nigerians access government programmes, financial services and other digital platforms if agencies align their systems around the NIN.
