Nigeria may receive a future visit from Pope Leo XIV after Vatican envoy Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher met President Bola Tinubu in Abuja and raised the prospect of deeper engagement between the Holy See and the country.

The meeting at the State House centred on interfaith dialogue, peace and tolerance, with Tinubu saying Nigeria would continue to work with religious leaders in confronting insecurity and promoting coexistence.

Reports from the meeting said Tinubu welcomed the possibility of hosting the Pope, while Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, spoke about the Vatican’s interest in peace-building and religious cooperation.

The development places Nigeria’s interfaith and diplomatic engagement with the Vatican back in focus at a time when faith leaders remain central to national conversations on security and unity.
