Diri Dethrones Bayelsa Traditional Ruler Over Insecurity

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has approved the removal of the suspended paramount ruler of Swali Community, Chief Wilcox Job Seiyefa, from the Ebeniken chieftaincy stool.

Vanguard, Daily Post and Punch reported that the decision was announced through the Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Akpe, during a meeting with stakeholders at Government House, Yenagoa.

The reports said the removal followed recommendations from a government-appointed fact-finding committee.

The monarch and the Swali Council of Chiefs had been suspended in May 2025 after allegations linked to insecurity in the community.

Punch and Daily Post reported that the state government cited Section 6 of Bayelsa’s Chieftaincy Law, especially provisions on peace, order and good governance.

The government directed that the process of electing a new paramount ruler for the community should begin immediately.

Vanguard reported that the process is expected to be completed within three months, while a caretaker arrangement was announced for the community.
