Suspected Boko Haram fighters have attacked a secondary school in Borno State, killing a teacher and abducting an unspecified number of students who were writing NECO examinations.

Vanguard reported that the attackers invaded Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area, at about 9 a.m. on Monday, firing sporadically into the air before whisking away an unknown number of candidates into the bush.

The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident and said some students remain unaccounted for.

Daily Post also reported that one teacher was shot dead during the attack and another sustained injuries. Residents told the outlet that Nigerian military troops stationed in the area had left on a patrol to Uba, about 16 kilometres away, before the attackers struck.

According to Vanguard, Daso said security operatives including the military, the Civilian Joint Task Force and the area commander in Askira/Uba have launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation and are combing surrounding forests to locate the abducted students.

The attack is the latest in a series of school abductions that have plagued Nigeria, despite repeated military offensives and surrender programmes in the North-East.

The students were writing the Senior School Certificate Examination organised by the National Examinations Council when the attack occurred.
