Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation Of Ex-FUOYE VC Fashina As Ambassador
President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm Professor Abayomi Sunday-Fashina as a non-career ambassador or high commissioner-designate.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Tinubu’s letter during plenary on Wednesday, according to Daily Post and Punch.
Fashina is the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti. Punch reported that Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening and further legislative action.
The committee was asked to examine the nominee and report back to the Senate within one week before a final confirmation vote.
In the letter, Tinubu said the nomination was made under constitutional provisions governing diplomatic appointments. He urged senators to consider the request quickly.
The nomination comes as the administration continues to fill diplomatic posts after earlier ambassadorial appointments and recalls.
Under Nigeria’s confirmation process, ambassadorial nominees must be screened by the Senate before they can assume duty. The screening usually reviews the nominee’s record, professional background and suitability for diplomatic assignment.
If confirmed, Fashina would join Nigeria’s diplomatic corps as a non-career envoy.
