Enugu North senatorial by-election

The NDC candidate in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, Oscar Ossai, has rejected the outcome of the poll, describing the exercise as fundamentally flawed and incapable of reflecting the true will of the electorate.

Premium Times reported that Ossai, who came third in the by-election won by the APC candidate Ikeje Asogwa, said after a comprehensive assessment of the conduct of the election, he had concluded that no valid by-election took place in the senatorial district.

Ossai said the electoral process fell short of the standards of credibility, transparency and fairness expected in a democratic election. He alleged that the election was marred by widespread irregularities, including the non-use of the Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System in many polling units, failure to electronically transmit results, and discrepancies between results announced at polling units and figures recorded during collation.

He also raised concerns over alleged vote buying, voter intimidation, violence, and manipulation of ballot papers, and alleged that INEC ad-hoc personnel were card-carrying APC members.

INEC declared APC’s Asogwa winner with 162,360 votes. PDP’s Nestor Ezeme polled 9,299, NDC’s Ossai 3,129, and ADC’s Chika Idoko 1,676.

The by-election was held following the death of Senator Okey Ezea of the Labour Party in November 2025.
