Presidency Blasts Obi Over Call For Tinubu Resignation

The Presidency has dismissed calls by NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation, describing them as childish, hollow and an unworthy distraction.

Punch reported that the Presidency, in a statement signed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, said Obi’s comparison of Tinubu’s situation to that of former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who resigned hours earlier, exposed a misunderstanding of Nigeria’s constitutional architecture.

Onanuga argued that President Tinubu was elected for a fixed four-year term and that comparing Nigeria’s presidential system with the United Kingdom’s parliamentary system reflects a misunderstanding of how democracy works.

Daily Trust confirmed the Presidency’s reaction, reporting that Onanuga said Obi’s comparison was misplaced. He advised Obi to await the 2027 presidential election rather than use social media to pressure the President out of office.

The Presidency also cited recent electoral victories by the ruling APC in Ekiti State and senatorial elections in Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo and Rivers states as evidence of continued public support for the President and his party.

Obi had in a post on X on Monday urged Tinubu to emulate Starmer and resign for allegedly failing to fulfil major campaign promises.
