Tinubu Sends State Police Amendment Bill To Senate
President Bola Tinubu has transmitted a Constitution Alteration Bill seeking the establishment of state police to the Senate.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the transmission during plenary on Tuesday, saying the Senate would consider the bill on Wednesday. He added that states have promised to consider the bill on the same day once they receive it.
Punch reported that the proposed legislation seeks to amend relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution to create a legal framework for state police across the federation.
Vanguard separately confirmed the transmission, reporting that the bill aims to provide the legal and institutional framework for the creation and operation of state police forces.
Tinubu had in February urged the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to accommodate state police, describing the reform as necessary to tackle terrorism, banditry and other security threats. During his Democracy Day address, he said more than 13,000 terrorists had been neutralised within the last year.
The bill is expected to undergo legislative scrutiny in the National Assembly, where lawmakers will consider its provisions and implications for Nigeria’s federal system.
NaijaTrend earlier reported here that the Senate had reconvened for an emergency plenary with the state police bill on the agenda.
