The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested two elderly men, aged 84 and 75, over alleged involvement in the sale of illicit drugs to teenage secondary school students in Umuahia, Abia State.

Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, 75, was arrested on June 19 following intelligence that he sold opioids from a patent medicine shop on Club Road, Umuahia. A search of the premises recovered 4.64 kilograms of tramadol and diazepam.

In a separate case, Godfrey Orji, an 84-year-old pensioner, was arrested after security personnel at Saint Silas Secondary School, Old Umuahia, caught him supplying drugs to two teenage students. He was handed over to police and later transferred to the NDLEA on June 18.

A 15-year-old SS2 student confessed that Orji supplied him with drugs, which he also distributed to other students.

The NDLEA said both suspects will be prosecuted, while the students involved have been placed under counselling and rehabilitation programme.

The arrests were part of a broader nationwide crackdown in which the agency also intercepted drug consignments, apprehended a wanted couple in Ekiti State, and arrested several suspects in Oyo State.

The agency has repeatedly warned that the involvement of older adults in drug distribution to minors is a growing concern, particularly in school environments where students are vulnerable to substance abuse.
