NSIB Opens Probe Into Benue Boat Accident That Killed 11
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has opened an investigation into the Benue boat accident that killed 11 people.
The accident was earlier reported by NaijaTrend here. The new development is the federal safety bureau’s on-site probe into what happened and how future incidents may be prevented.
Daily Post reported that NSIB Director-General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. led investigators to Wadata along the River Benue for an on-the-spot safety assessment.
A statement signed by the bureau’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, said the visit was meant to gather first-hand information from affected communities and stakeholders.
The bureau said the work is also aimed at strengthening safety measures on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia commended the NSIB response and called for stronger bureau presence in the state to support safety advocacy and risk reduction along the River Benue.
Badeh expressed condolences to the state government and families of the victims, saying every loss of life was one too many.
He said many accidents can be prevented through stronger safety awareness, responsible operations and closer cooperation among regulators, operators and waterway users.
The bureau has not yet released final findings. Its conclusions and safety recommendations are expected after the investigation is completed.
