Armed bandits attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, killing two soldiers and one police officer, officials said.

Security forces on guard engaged the attackers in a gun battle and repelled the assault, forcing the bandits to retreat into the surrounding forest, military and police sources confirmed.

NIPSS Kuru, a premier policy research institute that trains senior government officials, was established in 1986 and sits in a historically volatile corridor that has seen persistent bandit activity.

The attack is part of a wider wave of insecurity in Plateau State, where rural communities and strategic government installations have faced repeated incursions by armed groups throughout 2026.

The Nigerian Army said it had beefed up patrols in the Kuru axis following the incident and was working with police to track the fleeing attackers.

Plateau State authorities condemned the attack and called on the Federal Government to increase security presence in the North Central region.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
