The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has picked Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, a former deputy governor of Kano State, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.

The development comes amid the party’s broader primaries being held nationwide today, with reports also indicating that the coast is clearing for Gwarzo as the party consolidates its candidate list.

According to Premium Times, Gwarzo’s emergence follows extensive consultations and political alignments within the NDC in Kano State, one of the most politically significant states in the North West region.

The selection is seen as part of the NDC’s strategy to build a strong political base in Kano, which has the largest voter population of any state in Nigeria.

Daily Trust also reported that sitting Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s successor, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf — or as indicated, current political dynamics suggest Gawuna may be accepting the NDC senate ticket, clearing the path for Gwarzo’s governorship bid.

The NDC’s nationwide primaries, taking place today across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, are expected to produce candidates for presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state assembly positions.

As part of the exercise, the party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi is also being ratified, while candidates for other positions emerge through primaries and affirmations at designated centres nationwide.

All results from the exercise are to be collated and transmitted to the party’s National Headquarters for official announcement by the National Working Committee.
