Rotimi Amaechi secured a landslide victory in the Rivers State ADC presidential primary, polling 115,650 votes against Atiku Abubakar’s 912 votes, even as Atiku leads the national collation for the ADC ticket.

The result, announced late Wednesday, is a reminder of Amaechi’s continued grassroots strength in the South-South region. He also won the Bayelsa State primary convincingly, while Mohammed Hayatu-Deen scored 1,142 votes in Rivers.

State-Level Dynamics in the ADC Race

The Rivers result stands in sharp contrast to the national picture, where Atiku has reportedly won in 30 states with a total of 1,846,370 votes. Amaechi received 504,117 nationally and Hayatu-Deen 177,120.

Amaechi’s strong showing in Rivers and Bayelsa suggests the former governor retains deep loyalty in his home region even as the national contest tilts heavily in Atiku’s favour. The disparity is likely to fuel ongoing tensions within the ADC as Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen have both rejected the primary results.

Amaechi has alleged widespread voter disenfranchisement during the primaries, claiming about 80 per cent of party members were not allowed to vote. He has not indicated whether he will challenge the outcome in court or leave the ADC.
