The Super Eagles have opened camp in London for the 2026 Unity Cup, with Arthur Okonkwo and 13 other players taking part in the first wave of preparations ahead of Nigeria’s semi-final against Zimbabwe.

Punch reported that 14 players were present for Saturday evening’s first training session at Cray Valley FC, while Daily Post had earlier said 13 players had already checked in before the final arrivals expected later that night.

The camp gives coach Eric Chelle a short but useful window to assess players outside the usual pressure of a World Cup or AFCON qualifier. It also gives several fringe and newly invited players a chance to make a case before bigger assignments return.

Okonkwo among the early arrivals

Okonkwo, the Wrexham goalkeeper who has been drawing more attention in Nigeria’s goalkeeping conversation, was among the players already in camp as Chelle began work with both home-based and foreign-based options.

The early training session gave the coaching crew a first proper look at the group before the team faces Zimbabwe on Tuesday, May 26, in the semi-final of the invitational tournament.

The squad list for the Unity Cup includes a heavy experimental feel, with several uncapped or lightly tested players involved. That is partly because the tournament is a friendly competition, but it also reflects Nigeria’s need to widen the pool and stop relying only on familiar names.

A useful test for Chelle’s evolving squad

Beyond the result, this camp matters because it gives Chelle another chance to test combinations in midfield, defence and attack. Unity Cup games can look lightweight from a distance, but they still tell you who is sharp, who adapts quickly and who looks ready for a bigger run.

Nigeria’s first match against Zimbabwe will decide who moves into the final, while the wider tournament also features other teams from the African and Caribbean football community. The games have been granted Tier 1 international status, which makes the fixtures more useful than casual exhibition matches.

Nigeria’s camp still had more arrivals expected as of Saturday, but getting the first session done on schedule was a good start. That is usually half the battle in these short tournament windows, especially when players are flying in from different clubs and leagues.

For Chelle, the real win would be leaving London with two or three new players who look ready to compete for places when the full squad reconvenes.
