Lagos APC’s Highest Body Adopts Hamzat as 2027 Consensus Governorship Candidate
The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex political body of the APC in Lagos State, has formally adopted Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
GAC chairman Tajudeen Olusi made the announcement after a meeting of party leaders at Lagos House, Marina, on Tuesday, saying all 21 members present had agreed to back Hamzat. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu then raised Hamzat’s hand in a symbolic gesture that drew applause from the gathering. The GAC also announced it had purchased Hamzat’s ₦50 million APC nomination form on his behalf.
What the Adoption Means
“Following this option, we have adopted, we have all agreed that Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the current Deputy Governor of our state, is the consensus candidate of our party, and we have all pledged to stand by him,” Olusi said.
Sanwo-Olu added that GAC members had “taxed themselves” to fund the nomination form — signalling financial and political backing from the Lagos APC leadership in one move.
Hamzat has been Deputy Governor since 2019 and has long been seen as Sanwo-Olu’s preferred successor. Tuesday’s meeting made that preference official, with former Governor Ambode and other aspirants like Jandor now effectively cleared out of the picture. The GAC functions as the decision-making body for the APC in Lagos — its endorsement does not just signal intent, it sets direction.
Hamzat heads into the primary season with Lagos’s APC establishment behind him.
