A Kano State High Court on Friday sentenced two men to death by hanging for killing a mother and her six children in Dorayi Chiranci, Kano.

Justice Nasiru Saminu of High Court No. 11 delivered the judgment on seven counts of culpable homicide, according to Daily Trust’s court report.

The court also imposed life imprisonment with hard labour for armed robbery. A third defendant, Isiyaku Abdul’azeez, was discharged and acquitted because prosecutors had not established his involvement in the murder and conspiracy charges.

Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Abdulkarim Kabir Maude, who led the prosecution, said the court considered eight prosecution witnesses, 30 exhibits and evidence from the defence.

The judgment related to the killings on 17 January at the family’s home. The state government confirmed the deaths of the mother and six children in a statement on 21 January.

Maude said the government would seek to implement the death sentences if the convicted men did not appeal within the period allowed by law.
