The Nigerian Army has given Private Utim Terwase N500,000 after he rejected an alleged bribe from a suspected kidnapper in Plateau State, the military said.

Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) spokesperson Captain Polycarp Chinonso Oteh said the reward was presented on Wednesday on behalf of Major General Maxwell Dangana, commander of the operation and the Army’s 3 Division.

Terwase handed the suspect over to the appropriate authorities rather than accept the money, according to the military account. The reward equalled the N500,000 he was allegedly offered to let the suspect go.

Colonel Philimon Malgwi, commander of OPEP’s Sector 6, presented the payment for Dangana. The general commended Terwase’s honesty and discipline and urged other personnel to follow his example.

Daily Trust reported that Terwase apprehended the suspect after an attempted escape. The reports did not identify the suspect or say whether charges had been filed.
