A player at Ayisat Yusuf Football Academy has died and several teammates have been injured in a road crash while travelling from Ikenne, Ogun State, to a league fixture in Lagos.
The academy’s chief executive officer, Ayisat Yusuf, confirmed the death in a statement and said the team driver was also seriously affected.
Some of the injured players require urgent medical attention and further medical investigations, Yusuf said. She did not give a precise number of those injured.
The team had been heading to the Olympic Pitch in Sonya, Ijesha, for its match when the crash happened. The statement did not specify the crash location or explain what caused it.
Yusuf, a former Nigeria international, offered condolences to the dead player’s family and appealed for support for the injured players, their families and the driver.
She said the academy remained committed to their welfare and recovery and would release further updates as more information became available.
