Fire destroyed 110 buildings and temporary structures at Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano on Saturday, according to the state fire service.
Kano State Fire Service spokesperson Kabiru Isah Jafaru said in a statement that the agency received a distress call from a timber dealer at about 7.39am.
The damaged property comprised 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures across sections of the market, he said. Firefighters were sent from stations across Kano.
Jafaru said crews found several sections already burning when they arrived. They brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the market.
No casualties had been reported when Daily Trust filed its account. The service urged traders to take fire precautions during the harmattan season.
The cause remained under investigation. The reports did not establish the total financial loss suffered by traders.
