Police in Zamfara State say more than 30 bodies believed to be those of armed attackers have been found in farmland around Bukkuyum after security operatives repelled an attack.

Zamfara police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar announced the discovery in a statement on Saturday, describing clearance operations involving police officers and local security groups.

The command said the attackers had been prevented from entering the town. It described the bodies as those of suspected bandits, rather than announcing confirmed identities.

Abubakar said the operation began on 28 October after armed men attempted to attack Bukkuyum. Police and local security personnel exchanged gunfire with the attackers, according to the statement.

The command said armed groups were known to remove their dead and wounded from battle locations. It cautioned that the actual casualty total still required verification.

Police said clearance operations would continue with other security agencies. The statement did not name those whose bodies were found or give a date for completing the casualty verification.
