The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroyed seized products it valued at about N8 billion in Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Thursday.

Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the agency’s North-Central deputy director, Joseph Edor, said the goods were confiscated during enforcement operations across the zone.

They included banned alcoholic drinks in packs below 200ml, as well as expired, counterfeit and unwholesome food, medicines and cosmetics. The agency said most of the haul consisted of the small-pack alcoholic beverages.

Adeyeye said officers seized the products from manufacturing premises, shops, markets and motor parks. She linked the restrictions on small alcohol packs to concerns about their accessibility to young people and schoolchildren.

The Lafia exercise follows a separate destruction of seized products in Rivers State earlier this month.

Nasarawa State coordinator Gyani Stephen warned traders against selling counterfeit and banned products, saying the agency would take action against offenders, Punch reported.
