The House of Representatives has called for an independent investigation into the fatal Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State and an audit of military aircraft and maintenance systems.
The calls followed debate at Tuesday’s plenary on the October 5 crash of an ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda. Lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to release approved maintenance funds promptly and provide the spare parts and other resources needed for safe operations.
The proposed independent probe would run alongside the Air Force’s own inquiry, rather than replace it. Donald Ojogo, who represents a constituency in Ondo State, said the claims and counterclaims surrounding the crash made independent scrutiny necessary.
Premium Times reported that Speaker Abbas Tajudeen referred the motion to the House committees on Air Force, Aviation and Defence for further legislative action. Their proposed work includes examining the circumstances of the crash and identifying gaps in aircraft safety and inspection procedures.
Punch reported that the House also urged the Ministry of Defence to audit military aircraft and equipment, and asked the Air Force to strengthen maintenance and airworthiness checks, particularly for ageing aircraft. These demands do not establish that a maintenance failure caused the crash.
The accounts describe the motions differently: Punch reported a motion sponsored by Ojogo and a similar motion by Alhassan Rumrum of Kano; Premium Times identified Alhassan Usman of Kano as the mover, with Ojogo supporting the call for an independent investigation.
Ojogo commended local divers, Navy personnel and the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency for their response at the crash site. The House also called for appropriate welfare support and compensation for bereaved families, Punch reported.
The aircraft was travelling from Benin City to Lagos when it came down near Igbokoda. NaijaTrend previously reported the Air Force’s search for its flight recorders here.
Premium Times reported that lawmakers observed a minute’s silence in honour of those who died.
