Barcelona Confirm Yamal Out for Season with Hamstring Injury, World Cup Return Expected
Barcelona has confirmed that teenage star Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury, though the club expects him to recover in time for the World Cup.
The 18-year-old winger suffered the injury during Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday, clutching the back of his left leg moments after converting a first-half penalty. He was substituted immediately and replaced by Roony Bardghji.
Barcelona’s Official Statement
“The tests carried out have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg (biceps femoris muscle). The player will follow a conservative treatment plan. Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season, and he is expected to be available for the World Cup,” Barcelona said in a statement on Thursday.
Spain’s first World Cup match against Cape Verde is scheduled for June 15, roughly seven weeks away, giving Yamal a realistic window to recover under a conservative, non-surgical treatment plan.
Standout Season Cut Short
Yamal has been one of Barcelona’s most important players this season, recording 16 goals and 11 assists in 28 La Liga appearances. Across all competitions, the Spain international has been central to Hansi Flick’s side maintaining a nine-point lead at the top of the table with six matches remaining.
Barcelona still face trips to Getafe and Osasuna before hosting Real Madrid in El Clasico, followed by matches against Alaves, Real Betis, and Valencia.
Relief for Spain
The initial fear had been a more severe muscle tear that could have ruled Yamal out for months. The confirmation of a conservative recovery path eased concerns for both club and country.
Teammate Pedri said after the match: “I hope Lamine misses the fewest possible amount of time. He’ll undergo the tests tomorrow and we’ll see the nature of the issue. I wish him all the best.”
Yamal played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph and is widely regarded as essential to their World Cup ambitions.
