Four teenage girls die after boat capsizes in Jigawa

Four teenage girls have died after a boat carrying eight passengers capsized at Dudduru Pond in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said the accident happened at about 4pm on Wednesday, September 23, about three kilometres from Kwadige Village.

The boat was travelling from Kwadige Village to Chai Chai Sabuwa Market when it overturned while crossing the pond. Preliminary information from the NSCDC pointed to strong winds as a possible cause.

The victims were named as Hasiya Mu’azu, 13; Hauwa Lawan, 13; Fatima Lawan, 12; and Dawsiyya Lawan, 13. The command said the four survivors were rescued by farmers working near the pond.

Residents of Kwadige and Kuna villages also joined the rescue and recovery effort. The bodies of the four victims were later buried according to Islamic rites.

The incident adds to recurring safety concerns around local water transport in rural communities, where passengers often rely on small boats to reach farms and markets.
