US Coast Guard Lifts 12-Year Restriction On Ships From Nigeria

The United States Coast Guard has lifted a 12-year entry restriction on vessels that sail to the US after calling at Nigerian ports.

The Federal Government announced the change on Tuesday through Marine and Blue Economy Minister Gboyega Oyetola, saying the decision followed repeated US assessments of Nigeria’s port and maritime security system.

The restriction, known as a Condition of Entry, was imposed in June 2014. It meant vessels that had called at designated Nigerian ports before travelling to the United States had to undergo additional security checks and closer scrutiny.

The reports said the US Coast Guard carried out four assessments of Nigeria’s maritime security system and port facilities over the past two years. The visits took place from March 11 to 13, 2024; April 15 to 19, 2024; March 15 to 21, 2025; and April 13 to 17, 2026.

According to the Federal Government, the assessments showed improved compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code. The code sets global standards for port and ship security.

Oyetola linked the decision to work by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and other maritime stakeholders.

The change could reduce extra compliance checks for vessels connected to Nigerian ports when they enter the United States. It also gives Nigeria a stronger compliance signal in international shipping and port security.
