UNIZIK Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Incomplete August Salary

Lecturers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have begun an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their full August 2026 salary.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities branch at the university said it resolved at a congress on Monday, September 7, to withdraw services in line with the union’s standing position on unpaid salaries. The branch said the action would continue until its members receive the complete salary owed for August.

A statement signed by the branch chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, asked the university authorities and President Bola Tinubu, as Visitor to the university, to ensure full payment and prevent a repeat.

Premium Times also reported the shutdown and identified the university as Nnamdi Azikiwe University, popularly known as UNIZIK. It said the lecturers stressed that the sole reason for the action was the incomplete payment of August 2026 salaries.

The strike could disrupt academic work at the federal university in Anambra State if the payment dispute is not resolved quickly. The reports did not include a fresh response from the university management or the Federal Government.
