Two inmates die after cholera outbreak at Kano custodial centre
Two inmates have died after a cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State.
The Nigerian Correctional Service said laboratory tests confirmed the outbreak on September 23 after an inmate first developed vomiting and diarrhoea on September 17.
NCoS spokesman J.N. Osuji said emergency medical protocols were activated at the facility and that one death occurred inside the centre while another inmate died after referral to a government hospital.
The Service said the outbreak had been contained after joint work by its medical team and Kano State public health authorities. It also said no further deaths had been recorded since the diagnosis.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, was briefed on the outbreak and directed that measures to protect inmates and personnel should continue.
