Two Dead As Flood Hits Damaturu Communities In Yobe

Two people have died after heavy rain caused flooding across parts of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency identified the victims as Isa Haruna, 38, a security personnel popularly known as Mallam Matari, and Abba Kyari, 18. The agency said both drowned in the Pompomari area after an early morning downpour on Monday.

The flood affected Malari, Pompomari and nearby communities. SEMA said its search and rescue team worked with the Yobe State Fire Service after distress calls came in, but the two victims had already died by the time responders reached them.

Their bodies were taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit of General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu.

SEMA warned residents in low-lying communities to avoid flooded roads, drainage channels and waterways during heavy rain. It also urged parents and guardians to keep children away from rivers, streams, culverts and floodwater while schools are on holiday.

The agency advised residents to clear blocked drains where it is safe, follow weather alerts and move to higher ground when flooding starts.
