President Bola Tinubu has reappointed Bala Bila as the Independent National Electoral Commission’s national commissioner representing the North-East and nominated new national and resident electoral commissioners for Senate confirmation.

The nominees include Mustapha Aliu for the North-West, Bashir Muhammed Umar for the North-Central and Oluwatoyin Babalola for the South-West. Babalola is currently the resident electoral commissioner in Osun State.

Presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga announced the changes in a statement on Friday, October 16. He said the nominations would fill vacancies arising from the expiration of serving officials’ tenures.

Aliu is to replace Abdullahi Zuru, while Umar is to replace Muhammad Adamu. Babalola has been nominated to succeed Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24.

For the resident electoral commissioner positions, Tinubu nominated retired permanent secretary Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to represent Ekiti State. Zahradden Basiru Sanusi, from Jigawa State, was nominated to replace Saidu Ahmed Babura.

The nominations remain subject to Senate scrutiny and confirmation. Tinubu asked the chamber to expedite the process ahead of the general elections scheduled for January 2027.
