Tinubu Unveils Diaspora Health Plan, Urges Doctors Abroad To Return

President Bola Tinubu has announced fresh commitments to draw Nigerian medical professionals abroad into the country’s health system, while urging doctors and other health workers in the diaspora to return home or support reforms from abroad.

Vanguard reported the policy pledge from the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration, where Tinubu was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume. Premium Times separately reported Tinubu’s meeting with a delegation of Nigerian Diaspora Medical Associations Worldwide at the State House.

The National Diaspora Day event focused on using global Nigerian medical expertise to strengthen local health systems. Tinubu said Nigerian professionals abroad had built strong reputations in medicine, science and technology, but remained connected to the country.

Premium Times reported that the delegation was led by NIDCOM chief executive Abike Dabiri-Erewa and included health-sector officials. Tinubu said Nigeria needed the knowledge, innovation and experience of skilled professionals abroad to build a stronger healthcare system.

The government’s proposal includes plans to institutionalise diaspora contributions to healthcare, expand medical outreach and link Nigerian professionals abroad more directly with local health priorities. The reports did not give a start date for the programme.
