President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State following the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area last month.

A high-powered federal delegation led by the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, visited affected communities in Esiele and Yawota on Sunday to convey the President’s concern and assure residents of intensified rescue efforts.

The delegation, which included National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, and Defence Minister Christopher Musa, met with the Soun of Ogbomoso, HRM Kabiyesi Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, and the family of slain teacher Mary Oyedokun.

“Mr President is deeply troubled by this incident. Whatever it takes, our children and teachers will be brought back home safely,” Gbajabiamila told community leaders in Yoruba and English. “Your pain and anxiety are understood. By the grace of God, your children will return safely to your arms.”

The President also directed a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers. The communities’ request for a military base in the area will be forwarded to the President for consideration.

Forty-six pupils and staff from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School remain in captivity following the May 15 attack.
