Three vigilantes have been killed after suspected gunmen attacked Sabon-Layi community in Gwol District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack happened around 10 p.m. on Saturday, according to reports from Vanguard and Daily Trust. The victims were members of a local vigilante group said to be on duty when the assailants entered the community.

The spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident and described the killings as an attack on community efforts to protect lives and property.

He said the slain vigilantes were part of a local security arrangement created to protect residents from recurring attacks in the area.

“The attackers came and killed these men who were risking their lives to safeguard the community,” Tengwong said.

He urged the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to strengthen security in the area by deploying more personnel to prevent further attacks.

Vanguard reported that efforts to get a reaction from Plateau State Police Command spokesperson Alfred Alabo were unsuccessful. Daily Trust reported that Operation Enduring Peace spokesperson Captain Polycarp Oteh had not responded to inquiries as of press time.
