Three Nigerian students have won gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale in Rome, Italy.

The winners are Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Don Anele Munachimso and Onyedikachi Egejurum. Their results were announced on Tuesday by education advocate and Educare CEO Alex Onyia.

Punch reported that the students reached the global competition after emerging among the top performers at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad. The Rome finale brought together participants from more than 150 countries.

Daily Post reported that Don Anele Munachimso won gold in Science and was named among the world’s best performers in that category. It also listed Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Onyedikachi Egejurum among the Nigerian gold winners.

The result gives Nigeria a rare positive education story at a time when schools and families are under pressure from costs, insecurity and poor learning outcomes in many parts of the country.
