SSANU confirms release of eight months’ arrears, says other payments remain due
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities says the Federal Government has released funds for eight months’ salary arrears, but two other outstanding payments remain unsettled.
Union president Mohammed Ibrahim confirmed the release and said members would soon begin receiving payment alerts, Daily Trust reported. The release of funds does not establish that every worker has already been paid.
The development follows SSANU’s 14-day ultimatum over implementation of the 2026 FGN/SSANU agreement. The union’s strike warning was reported earlier here.
The arrears concern the agreement’s Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, known as CONTTA, with payments calculated from January 1, 2026. The funds were released less than 48 hours after the union made its demand public.
SSANU says the government still owes two months’ salaries withheld during the 2022 strike and one-year arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases. Daily Trust reported that the union continued to demand settlement of those entitlements despite the latest release.
Ibrahim welcomed Education Minister Tunji Alausa’s intervention. The union also urged state governments and governing councils to fund full implementation of the agreement in state-owned universities.
He advised SSANU branches to work with their university managements to ensure prompt payment and report any shortfall.
