Seven Miners Die In Plateau Pit Collapse
Seven miners have died after a mining pit collapsed at Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Residents said the collapse happened around 7pm on Wednesday while the miners were working at the site. Several other people were reported injured.
The victims were trapped underground after the ground gave way. Residents and other miners began recovery efforts, but the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, said the seven miners were later found dead.
A resident, Albert Danlami, said the collapse caused panic in the community as people rushed to the site. Punch also reported calls from residents for tighter safety checks at mining sites in the area.
Mining-pit collapses have been reported in several Plateau communities, including Barkin Ladi, Jos South and Riyom, where informal mining activity has continued around open pits.
