Senate Approves N403.1bn Police Trust Fund Budgets For 2025, 2026

The Senate has approved N403.1 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund across the 2025 and 2026 budget years.

The approval covers N170.1 billion for 2025 and N233.96 billion for 2026. The money is meant to support police equipment, training, barracks and station repairs, and other work tied to strengthening policing.

The decision followed the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs. Vanguard reported that the committee’s vice-chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde of Oyo Central, presented the report on behalf of the chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori of Jigawa East.

Channels TV also reported the approval and said lawmakers linked the funding to wider efforts to improve the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force at a time of persistent security concerns across the country.

For the 2026 budget, Vanguard reported that N43.78 billion was approved for capital expenditure, while allocations to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the Police Trust Fund Headquarters were put at N179.11 billion.

The Police Trust Fund was set up to help close funding gaps in policing, including equipment and welfare needs. The latest Senate approval now puts fresh pressure on police authorities and the fund managers to show how the money will translate into better security response.
