Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has given illegal occupants and traders on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway median 72 hours to leave before a demolition and clean-up operation begins.

Vanguard reported that the governor issued the warning during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise at Itire Road in Surulere on Saturday.

Sanwo-Olu said enforcement would begin from Monday and cover the stretch from Orile Iganmu to Okokomaiko.

He described the occupation of the highway median as an abuse of public infrastructure and a threat to the reconstruction of the 10-lane superhighway.

“This is the final notice to everyone occupying the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. From next week, we are coming to clear the entire median,” Vanguard quoted him as saying.

Premium Times also reported that the governor directed the demolition of shanties and makeshift structures along the corridor after giving occupants 72 hours to vacate.

Channels TV reported that Sanwo-Olu ordered a major clearance of illegal structures along the axis and urged residents to help keep Lagos clean.

The governor said the state had procured 150 additional compactor trucks to improve waste collection across Lagos.

Channels TV reported that the government is also working on a landfill management plan to improve turnaround time for Private Sector Participation waste operators.

Sanwo-Olu was accompanied during the sanitation exercise by officials including his wife, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab.

Punch also reported the quit notice and shanty demolition order, with the same Lagos-Badagry Expressway focus.

The story is separate from the earlier Lagos building collapse coverage because it concerns environmental enforcement and road corridor clearance.
